In the airline industry environment it is necessary for pilot groups to build a relationship of mutual cooperation between their elected representatives to protect our career prospects and working conditions, while respecting the autonomy, individual rights and cultural diversity of each individual pilot group.

SPA (SkyTeam Pilots Alliance) was founded in October 2000 as a logical step leading towards closer cooperation among pilots employed by the Sky Team carriers. SPA compacts were created. Since then, pilot representatives have been meeting regularly twice a year and SPA meetings became a main source of data interchange amongst the various pilot groups located worldwide.
In September 2004 Continental, KLM and Northwest Airlines joined the Sky Team. Such a big expansion needed a restructuring.
Pilot representatives met in Prague a few days after and created new documents that would better suit the needs of the group of more than 30.000 pilots.
The name SkyTeam Pilots Alliance was changed to SkyTeam Pilots Association.

The SPA executive board agreed on the preparation of a "SPA news" magazine during the last meeting that was held in Cape Town. The main reason for creating the "SPA news" is to increase awareness of the SPA to the Sky Team line pilots. The "SPA news" will be issued twice a year and should give a short outline on what is happening in the rest of the SPA world.
Each union will have an opportunity to inform other pilots about their situation, what threats are the other pilots facing or simply give a brief outline about their respective activities.

We hope that the "SPA news" will be viable and will be positively accepted by the Sky Team pilots. We think that the "SPA news" will react flexibly on the changes in the industry and give new SPA officers a good information tool.
